Miriam Makeba Home for Girls Midrand

BENEFICIARY: Miriam Makeba Home for Girls – Midrand
INVESTMENT: R7000

Eighteen girls live at the Makeba Rehabilitation Centre for Girls in Midrand. The centre, which opened in 2003, has an IT room and a productive vegetable garden to keep them busy on weekends and after school. The girls range in age from 11 to 17 years. Some are orphans and some come from dysfunctional families, but all appear to have found a happy home in Midrand.

The girls, usually from troubled homes, have been brought to the centre from the department of social welfare, from Family and Child Welfare and from the South African Police Service. The funds were used to purchase new school shoes for each of the girls as well as new toiletries and some luxury items like chocolates and magazines.
